How to Find the First or Last Occurrence in a Dataset?

One of the questions that you will be interested in answering when working with a time-based dataset is to monitor the change happening across time. The most generic way is to check first against the last occurrence in a dataset. For example, for a group of merchants with different sold products, what is the count of the different types of products sold at the beginning of the year in comparison to the end of the year?
